Known for its quaint Victorian cottages and pristine beaches, Cape May, New Jersey has been a seaside destination for generations. With only one hose, they were ill-equipped to combat the blaze, and officials quickly dispatched a train with supplies from Camden, New Jersey However, by the time the train arrived, it was too late to save Congress Hall and the six other hotels that were destroyed, and it had then spread to the surrounding cottages, eventually leaving only the skeletal remains of a once-booming resort community.

Per guidelines from the City of Cape May, between June 5 and June 22, we will be operating at 60% capacity. Today Belmar is one of the most active towns on the Jersey Shore as it attracts many families and singles during the summer. On November 9, 1878 , a fire broke out at the Ocean House hotel, located directly across from Congress Hall.

You may think you've left New Jersey and entered a tropical resort getaway when you first see the pink umbrellas, lounge chairs, and waiters delivering iced drinks to manhattan the beach. The first known lighthouse at Cape May was built in 1823, but had to be moved. Architectural historians George E. Thomas and Carl Doebley list 100 significant buildings in their 1976 book Cape May, Queen of the Seaside Resorts: Its History and Architecture.

Another interesting tourist activity is searching the beaches for translucent gemstones that have been dubbed "Cape May Diamonds." The "diamonds" are translucent pebbles, found on the shores of Cape May Point.

With the highest concentration of Victorian homes (second to San Francisco), Cape May draws in visitors from around the world each year. While a stark contrast to Cape May New Jersey, Atlantic City may be exactly the fun, high-energy getaway you are looking for.

In the reconstruction of the town, families began to build summer cottages, replacing some of the former oversized and impractical hotels. A brief history of the City of Cape May indicates a substantial claim as the oldest Sea Shore resort in America. Thanks to its wealth of Victorian architecture, the whole city of Cape May has the distinction of being a National Historic Landmark.
